APOD supports Defence, veteran and First Responder communities and their families across Australia. Our broader purpose is to strengthen the financial wellbeing, connection and future opportunities of our community through member benefits, employment and volunteering, community initiatives and other forms of practical support.
Supporting veteran employment and broader career opportunities for the Defence community has been part of the APOD member experience for some time. We initially developed the capability in-house and made it available through the APOD app, giving members a dedicated place to discover opportunities from organisations looking to engage with the Defence and veteran community.
As APOD has grown, and our community has expanded to include First Responders, we saw an opportunity to build something much more capable.
For us, employment and volunteering are not simply about publishing opportunities.
Service life shapes people in ways that often extend well beyond the role itself. Defence members and First Responders build skills, leadership, resilience, judgement and experience that can carry into future careers and into the wider community. Their families can also navigate postings, relocation, shift work, operational commitments, career disruption and changing family circumstances.
That means the experience we provide needs to recognise the community behind the candidate, and the contribution they can continue to make.
For some, the next step is a new career. For others, volunteering offers a way to stay connected, contribute their skills, build experience, support a cause or continue the sense of service that has been part of their working life.
At the same time, employers and community organisations across Australia are looking for better ways to connect with Defence, veteran and First Responder talent. We wanted to create a stronger bridge between those organisations and our community, while retaining control over the quality and relevance of the opportunities we present.
Moving beyond our in-house platform
The decision to move to Job Boardly was about taking what we had already built and giving it room to grow.
Rather than continuing to develop every job board feature ourselves, Job Boardly gave us access to a more capable and feature-rich platform that we could integrate into the broader APOD ecosystem.
Importantly, we did not want to replace the in-app experience our members were already familiar with or send them to an unrelated third-party service.
The platform allowed us to support employment and volunteering within the APOD app while, for the first time, also creating a dedicated web experience at jobs.apod.com.au.

That combination matters. Existing APOD members can discover opportunities through the environment they already use, while the website makes our employment and volunteering offering more accessible and discoverable to people engaging with APOD through the web.
A curated employment and volunteering environment
We are deliberately not trying to create another general-purpose job board.
Our focus is on building a curated environment relevant to Defence, veterans, First Responders and their families.
That includes veteran employment opportunities, broader Defence and First Responder roles, and opportunities from employers that genuinely want to engage these communities. It also allows us to highlight industries, specialist areas and organisations we believe are particularly relevant to our members.
Volunteering is an equally important part of that proposition.
People from service backgrounds often bring highly transferable skills, strong leadership, teamwork and a willingness to contribute. Volunteering creates a pathway for those skills to be applied in new settings, while also offering connection, purpose, experience and the opportunity to give back to the broader community.
For community organisations, it creates another way to connect with people who bring valuable experience and a strong service mindset.
Creating value on both sides
The new platform gives us considerably more flexibility in how we connect our community with opportunities.
We can create dedicated areas around particular employers, industries and types of opportunity, improve how members search and discover relevant roles, and build employment and volunteering more deeply into the broader APOD member experience.
Just as importantly, it gives us a stronger platform for working with employers and community organisations that want to meaningfully engage Defence and First Responder communities.
For APOD, that is where the real opportunity sits.
Job Boardly has allowed us to transition from an in-house employment product to a platform we can continue to build on, without losing the connection to our existing membership or app.
The result is not simply a new jobs website. It is a stronger foundation for how APOD can connect our community with employment, volunteering and organisations that value the skills, experience and contribution they bring.
And we are only at the beginning of what we intend to build from it.
